Part two - Wind River Range
The road to Jackson Hole. I opened my soul to spend all those adventures of our
right started tour. We went south. Matt drove and I checked the road on
my map. That day the weather was really nice. We went through Tetons to
say : 'See you!' (to the most beautiful mountains I've ever seen). I had
to take a couple more pictures. When we were in Jackson Hole we stopped
at the supermarket there to buy something to eat, to drink (no alcohol,
ha, ha) and I bought some more film. Then we went down the south 191st,
which led to Wind River Range. It wasn't easy at all to find the right
turnings because my map is not too detailed. Then we came to a village
next to the entry of the reservation. We wanted to hike up The Gannett
Peak, which was the main reason of us to go that place. There was a pub
and several houses, which might have been for tourists. At the beginning
we thought everything was easy so we even didn't care about any better
map. But we were wrong. However we realized it after while. We had already
gone pretty far down to Wind River Range but we knew what had happened
on The Big Horn Peak and neither me nor Matt wanted to repeat it. We came
back to that village to get a better map. It was clear there must be a
map in the pub. "Let's go!" There was a really big map hanging on a wall
but I didn't understand it (I didn't know about Matt), so we asked for
a portable map. The owner of that pub had a good info map in his PC. While
he was showing us the places we wanted to see, he asked us if we were going
to hike to The Gannett Peak. "Yes", we answered. "Do you guys have horses
or lambs?" He asked. "Why?" We asked. "You might need them." He answered.
"How long do you think it takes to hike to Gannett Peak?" We asked (we
wanted to make it in one or two days). "Two or three days to go under GP
and one day to go up there. Multiply it by two and that's what it takes."
That was an answer we didn't expect. It was something like a jump into
cold water of Yellowstone Lake. He saw the disappointment in our faces
and he migh t have wanted to encourage us. "Guys there are so many very
beautiful places where you can get to in one day that …" We jumped into
our car and went down the WRR road. When the desk said 'Wind River Reservation',
there was already bad road. Not only was it sand but the surface was like
after a tank, wavy and hard. It was the worst road I have ever gone on
in the US (But here in Czech republic we sometimes have worse roads than
that one). Even the CD player used to jump out of it's place in the control
desk. We stopped at a very nice place with a good view beside The Wind
River. We set up a tent and went to find some wood. It was almost dark
when we made fire. We took some sandwiches, which Tatiana made for us -
By the way she was pretty brave. She prepared so much food for us even
she knew though it was a big risk. We appreciated it Tatiana, thank you.
- and sat around the fire. That was beautiful night. The sky was clear
and full of stars (I don't know if it was right here, but I saw a falling
star and I wished something very important for me. I'll tell you if it
happens.) and we had a long and good chat. We heard some 'coyotes after
party' (elks, ha ha) but so clearly and so long like I had never before.
We heard real coyotes too. When the fire was almost dead we went to crash
(Katie, you told me this word and a couple of others, thank you.). That
was a good but tiring day.
Our first morning. The weather was on our side. Early morning we woke up and than it came. To hell
I was frozen. Man there had been a bottle full of water before we fell
asleep, but that morning the water was not moving. Yeah, it was like stone.
I tried to convince the water inside, that there was no reason to be of
a firm phase, but even that didn't help.
When we got out of the tent the view was beautiful. After a while we got up, took some pictures and started
to pack our tent. Then we went (by the car of course) to the end of the
terrible road. There was a small parking place where we left the car and
started the first hike of our trip.
Our first hike. The trail went along a nice lake. This view promised a beautiful landscape. The landscape was very beautiful, even the weather
was good so we could enjoy it fully. We didn't actually know where we wanted
to go and the trail signs also didn't help us much, but anyway the hike
was fine.
It looks big from this side but it was pretty tiny at the end. We crawled inside a big pit going through a rock where
a brook flowed. And at the end of the pit I wanted to take a picture using
the self start system. That was funny. I put the camera on a stone on one
side of the brook and I wanted to get to the other side without getting
wet. Impossible. However I found it out in a second.
What a surprise?! Since that time I hadn't cared so much about getting
wet. Our hike continued over a hill. I thought if a man went up then passing
the top he had to go down. No, wrong idea.
Hiking up the hill. There was almost flat ground with rocks on both sides
and with trees, grass and a river (probably branch of Wind River) in the
direction up to the valley. The river led us. We went against the stream.
Almost at the end of the valley we found a place where the stream (of the
river) was flowing outside of the earth. It was a small basin with water
grass and full of small fish having a good time there.
This is the small kingdom of fish. When I tried to throw a fly on the level, which I caught
before, one of the fish noticed it. I have never seen such a quick action.
Oh it might have tasted good. After small food we went on.
That's the unexpectable valley. Man what a surprise up the valley. It was amazing.
Imagine a strip of trees and behind it a small lake ended with very steep
rocks shaped in a half circle (unfortunately the picture is not here).
Moreover there were tiny pieces of some sparkling stone spread all over
the bottom of the lake. In addition there was a beach behind the trees
so I just laid there and was dreaming about … I even took one of those
tiny stones to Czech Republic and I'm going to check the origin of them.
We went back filled with … you know what. We took a direction to The Flaming
Gorge.
On the way to the Flaming Gorge. In the background there might be the Gannet Peak. The end of the part two
